Wallpaper Wednesday – Bike Across Bago

For this week’s Wallpaper Wednesday we move from the sand dunes to ice roads with some rider pics and a great video of this year’s ride across Lake Winnegabo in central Wisconsin. About 200 people took part in Bike Across the Bago this year, not bad since it was a chilly 9°F at the start and only warmed up to 14°F.

About 15 people took part in the inaugural ride in 2015. Since then it has been loosely organized by the administrators of the Bike Across Bago Facebook Page. They monitor ice conditions and coordinate the ride with the Paynes Point Hook and Spear Fishing Club, The Quinney Fishing Club and the Shanty Bar and Grill.

Sean Lynch, the owner of Winnebago Bicycle, plans an overnight bikepacking trip at High Point State Park as part of the ride. Seven people braved the cold temperatures and camped this year compared to 14 last year when it was warmer.

Sean and his shop lead a wide variety of rides from alleycats to bikepacking. Find more details about those fun rides on the shop FB page here. This year, his pals Ross and AJ from New Normal Studios in nearby Neenah created the amazing video below of the ride. A few moths ago they also did a very nice Bob Ross/Bike Farmer inspired video of Sean building a custom Otso Whaheela that you should definitely watch with a cup of coffee, tea or adult beverage of your choice.

The ice road this year was a mix of drifted snow and bare ice, so studded tires were definitely advised.

I’m planning to shoot up to Bayfield today to check out the ephemeral ice road to Madeline Island. Hopefully it will still be open and I will have a report on Fat-Bike.com soon. The wind and currents on Lake Superior combined with climate change have made that road hit and miss lately.

Last year it was only open for a week and I missed it. A local friend wants to ride it on Friday, but the forecast has me scared it might not be open then, so I am heading up today. If it is still open Friday, I’ll go up again. Stay tuned in to your Fat-Bike.com channel ….

  1. This is a great event, if you ever have the chance to make it you should!! I camped this year (so I can drink all day and not have to drive home) for the first time and it took it to a whole new level!
